When Emery Sullivan, an ex-private investigator, meets the conspicuously straight Madeleine at a queer speed-dating night, sparks don’t exactly fly. But when Madeleine reveals she’s being stalked by a mysterious stranger called Swann, Sullivan is hooked - and agrees to take the case. She starts following Madeleine as a way of observing Swann: finding out who he is; what he wants; and what he might be capable of. But the closer she gets to the both of them, the more lines between detective and stalker begin to blur…
This is a rehearsed reading of Without That Certain Thing, a darkly comic mystery inspired by noir detective stories/films, examining ideas around romantic love, sexuality, and stalking. The play was first seen at a Fine Mess Theatre Bites & Scratches night and now receives its premiere full length reading.
