Front Of House / Usher Volunteering Opportunity
Greenwich Theatre has been providing live entertainment for the people of South East London since 1855. With a history that begins in the English Music Hall tradition in the nineteenth century, more recent times have seen the theatre transferring major plays to the West End, on tour around the UK and around the world - but always, our local audiences come first. In recent years the theatre has worked hard to evolve in the face of reducing funding, to ensure that the shows on stage remain of a high quality and the theatre continues to serve its loyal and long-standing audience while attracting new people to see our work. A visit to Greenwich Theatre will always mean a chance to see quality theatre, early in its life; a chance to tell people about a new theatre company or a new play before it hits the big time. Huge international stars like Rupert Everett have made their London debuts at Greenwich Theatre, Alan Ayckbourn tried out shows here before transferring them to the West End, and John Mortimer premiered A Voyage Around My Father here. In years to come, we are confident that people will be talking about the shows and the careers that we’re launching today.
To make that possible, to try out new shows and give opportunities to the stars of tomorrow before they are well known, we are indebted to our supporters, from the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the trusts and foundations that help us with the cost of work, to the individual friends and angels that make sure generous contributions to our continued success.
We are now looking to add to that list of supporters by bringing together a team of friendly people who believe in the theatre and our work, to assist the Front Of House team in running efficient services for our theatre and events programme.
All our ushers are volunteers and they are key members of the FOH team, staffing the public areas of the building during events and productions. They are the ambassadors of the theatre. They perform various duties, but most importantly they ensure a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for our audience members.
We are looking for people with a pleasant manner, enthusiasm, a willingness to follow instruction and plenty of commitment. The role requires ushers to work ad hoc shifts; a mix of evenings, weekends and weekday morning/matinees depending on the run. We need our ushers to commit to at least two shifts per calendar month and you are free to choose your own shifts. Approx. hours: a shift is 3 hours. Please note that we will provide front of house training and ongoing support.
If you would like to become more involved with Greenwich Theatre, we can offer you the following:
- The chance to see fun, innovative and exciting theatre for free
- A new experience for anyone looking to work in the arts or broaden their employment experience
- The chance to gain inside knowledge of a working theatre
- The opportunity to develop new skills
- The opportunity to be part of your community
- A new social opportunity – a good chance to meet interesting people and make new friends
This is an ongoing opportunity for volunteers interested in being a part of a local community theatre.
